เปิดโลกเมนู ”หัวใจสด” ของนกพัฟฟิน กับ ”ความอร่อย” ที่แลกมาด้วย ”ความโหดร้าย”

นกพัฟฟิน (Puffin) เป็นนกทะเลหน้าตาน่ารัก คล้ายเพนกวินเวอร์ชันจิ๋ว ปากสีส้มสดใส ขนตัดดำ ขาวเหมือนใส่ทักซิโด้ตลอดเวลา อาศัยอยู่ตามชายฝั่งของแถบไอซ์แลนด์ นอร์เวย์ และเกาะบริเวณแถบอาร์กติก พวกมันมีนิสัยเป็นมิตรและไม่ค่อยหวาดกลัวมนุษย์ นั่นจึงกลายเป็น “จุดอ่อน” ที่ทำให้พวกมันตกเป็นเหยื่อของมนุษย์ได้ง่ายมาก

ในประเทศไอซ์แลนด์ การล่านกพัฟฟินเป็นทั้งวัฒนธรรมเก่าแก่และกิจกรรมทางเศรษฐกิจ โดยเฉพาะตามเกาะ Vestmannaeyjar ซึ่งมีประชากรพัฟฟินสูงที่สุดในประเทศ การล่าจะเกิดขึ้นในช่วงฤดูร้อน ซึ่งนกจะกลับมาเพาะพันธุ์และวางไข่ การจับส่วนมากจะใช้วิธีที่เรียกว่า “Sky Fishing” คือใช้ตาข่ายดักพัฟฟินกลางอากาศเวลาที่พวกมันบินกลับรัง เป็นภาพที่ทั้งเศร้าและสลดอย่างที่สุด

ส่วนเนื้อที่เหลือจะนำไป “รมควัน” (Smoked Puffin), “ทอด” หรือ “ย่าง” เสิร์ฟตามภัตตาคารหรูในไอซ์แลนด์ โดยเฉพาะที่รองรับนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติที่อยากลอง “ของแปลก” โดยไม่รู้ว่ามีเบื้องหลังที่โหดร้ายแค่ไหน

ที่น่าเป็นห่วงไปกว่านั้นคือ ปัจจุบัน ประชากรนกพัฟฟินกำลังลดลงอย่างรวดเร็ว จากผลของการล่าแบบไม่ยั้ง และผลกระทบจากภาวะโลกร้อนที่ส่งผลต่อแหล่งอาหารของพวกมัน (เช่น ปลาแซนเดิล ซึ่งเป็นอาหารหลัก) ส่งผลให้ในบางพื้นที่อย่างประเทศนอร์เวย์ ได้มีการห้ามล่าพัฟฟินแล้ว เนื่องจากจำนวนประชากรลดลงจนน่าตกใจ

Unveiling the Dish of “Raw Puffin Heart” - A Delicacy Paid for with Cruelty

Puffins are adorable seabirds, often compared to miniature penguins. With their bright orange beaks and black and white feathers resembling a tuxedo, they live along the coastal cliffs of Iceland, Norway, and surrounding Arctic islands. Their friendly nature and lack of fear toward humans sadly make them easy prey.

In Iceland, puffin hunting is both a long-standing tradition and an economic activity especially in the Vestmannaeyjar islands, where the country’s largest puffin population resides. Hunting takes place during the summer when the birds return to breed and nest. Most are caught using a method called “sky fishing,” where large nets are used to catch puffins mid-air as they fly back to their burrows a deeply saddening and disturbing sight.

Once captured, the birds are killed by breaking their necks, skinned, and their hearts are removed while still fresh eaten raw and uncooked. It is believed that raw puffin heart provides high energy and is considered a rare and exotic delicacy.

The remaining meat is either smoked, fried, or grilled, then served at upscale restaurants in Iceland especially those catering to foreign tourists seeking unusual dishes, unaware of the cruelty behind the experience.

Even more concerning is the fact that puffin populations are now rapidly declining. This is due to excessive hunting and the effects of climate change, which are disrupting their food sources (such as sand eels, a primary diet). In some countries like Norway, puffin hunting has already been banned as populations have dropped alarmingly.

However, in Iceland, hunting continues. Many tourists are still drawn to the so-called “exotic” nature of this dish unaware that the flavor comes at the cost of an innocent life.

Sometimes… the word “tradition” is simply not a good enough excuse not when it costs a life unnecessarily.
